Rainbow crosswalks can now be found at worksites and schools across the Cowichan Valley School District (SD79).
The new crosswalks come after the only ones found were at Lake Cowichan schools. The rainbow crosswalk project began through the Cowichan Valley Teachers Union Social Justice Committee and student advocacy across the district.
Chair of the Board of Education Candace Spilsbury says the project has become a colourful reminder of discrimination the LGBTQ2+ community faces.
“We are excited to be a part of the project that saw rainbow crosswalks installed across our district,” said Spilsbury “The rainbow crosswalks are a colourful reminder of the discrimination that the LGBTQ2+ community faces.”
The district says the rainbow crosswalk shows to the LGBTQ2+ community that the “school has committed to welcoming you and your family here with dignity, respect and safety.”
Funding for the project came from the Board of Education for SD79, the Cowichan Valley Teachers’ Federation and paint donated by Dulux Paints.
