Can he survive cancer and win the race of his life? Real-life drama – on and off the track – unfolds Sunday, Sept. 6 on CHEK with the World Premiere of ‘BEFORE I’M GONE’ immediately followed by LIVE coverage of Western Speedway’s  SHOCKWAVE SEATS CANADA 200.

It’s a Vancouver Island story from the heart of Langford – Western Speedway. It’s also a universal story, of life and death and the struggle to beat the odds.

When legendary race car builder Dave Smith was diagnosed with stage four prostate cancer, he vowed “before I’m gone” to fill his bucket list of competing from the driver’s seat in Western Canada’s biggest motorsport event – the Shockwave Seats Canada 200.

Smith’s real-life story will unfold on CHEK television Sunday, September 6, starting at 6 pm with the world premiere of ‘Before I’m Gone. The hour-long doc from Victoria’s M1 Films follows Smith’s battle to get his cancer into remission and live out his life-long dream. It will be seen for the first time on CHEK, where it will be aired and streamed commercial-free.

Immediately following ‘Before I’m Gone’, at 7 pm, CHEK will broadcast live – for the first time on television – Canada’s longest running and most prestigious late model auto-racing event – the Shockwave Seats Canada 200.

Smith and two dozen other drivers will compete in what will be the only event this season at Western Speedway, due to COVID-19. The 200 lap race will take place on the 4/10ths mile oval track without spectators in the stands, but will be seen on CHEK and across Canada on REV TV.

CHEK is partnering with Roll Focus to bring this multi-camera production to television. CHEK’s Jeff King will host the pre-race show beginning at 7 pm. CHEK’s Cole Sorenson, who is also the voice of Western Speedway, will call the race play-by-play after Langford Mayor Stu Young officially announces the start at approximately 7:15.
