BC Hydro is getting to work on numerous outages that have left thousands of customers on Vancouver Island without power.

The Crown corporation said Wednesday it is preparing for major snow and wind events on the Island and lower mainland, and that crews are on standby for possible weather-related outages.

One of the hardest-hit regions is on the southwest coast of the Island, with about 2,000 B.C. Hydro customers without power between Sooke and Port Renfrew.

On the North Island, an area that includes Port McNeill, Telegraph Cove, Alert Bay and Malcolm Island has more than 1,600 BC Hydro customers without power.

An outage between Tofino and Ahousat is affecting nearly 1,600 customers.

There are other smaller outages on the Island, as well.
