Residents of Port Hardy can now “adopt” a street.

The District of Port Hardy announced late last month that it has introduced the Adopt-A-Street program to the community.

The Adopt-A-Street program gives organizations and volunteer groups the opportunity to “adopt” a designated street within their local community. Under Port Hardy’s program, those who adopt a street, are responsible for cleaning it twice a month for two years.

“Building community spirit and pride, this initiative is a great opportunity for you, your family or your organization to help keep Port Hardy clean and beautiful year-round,” the District of Port Hardy said in a press release on its website.

By adopting a street, Port Hardy will erect an Adopt-A-Street sign featuring the name of the volunteer or volunteers — or the organization name — on the adopted street.

Adopt-A-Street programs are in place in a number of other municipalities in B.C. including Coquitlam, Burnaby, Surrey, Richmond, Port Moody and Chilliwack.

There is a similar program called Adopt-A-Highway that is offered in B.C. and other jurisdictions in North America. The City of Nanaimo also offers an Adopt-A-Park program, which is based on the same idea.
