The RCMP is asking for help identifying a porch package thief who allegedly stole a parcel from the front door of a central Nanaimo home.

At 10:46 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, security cameras capture footage of a woman allegedly stealing the parcel off the front porch and taking off.

The homeowner told police he and his wife were expecting a parcel to be delivered that day from Amazon, which contained generic household items. It was being dropped off by a local courier company that they have used many times before.

At 9:30 a.m., the couple received a notification on their home security system that the parcel had been delivered. Then, a little over an hour later, he then received another notification at 10:46 a.m. that the parcel had been picked up.

A quick check of their notifications showed the unknown package thief simply get out of the car, walk up and take the parcel.

The female suspect has long blonde hair, is approximately 30 to 35 years old and was wearing an Adidas hoodie and black sunglasses. She was a passenger in a small, blue, 4-door car which she appeared to have arrived in.

The Nanaimo RCMP are not only asking for help identifying the suspect, but also warning residents to be extra careful this time of year with home deliveries.

These incidents are expected to increase throughout the holiday season. Don’t become a victim and use some basic rules around home deliveries,” said Constable Gary O’Brien of the Nanaimo RCMP.

Police recommend making sure parcels are only delivered at times when you are home, and to arrange to have them either delivered to your workplace, left at the mailing depot or dropped off at a trusted friend’s place or neighbour’s home.

RCMP says it might be worth it to consider investing in a lockbox for secure parcel delivery.

If you have information on this incident, you are asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2020-43981.
