Victoria police say the man arrested following a stabbing on Gorge Road, it turns out, is not the suspect, and that the person responsible for committing the crime remains at large.

A stabbing occurred at the intersection of Gorge Road East and Albany Street on Sunday evening, at around 5:45 p.m. during an altercation involving the suspect and multiple others, according to VicPD.

One man was taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries after being stabbed and bear sprayed. Two other victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries after being bear sprayed.

Police say the stabbing victim remains in hospital in stable condition at the moment.

Officers eventually arrested a man at a temporary housing facility in the 100-block of Gorge Road East.

However, the department says, after further investigation, it turns out the man was not the suspect but is considered a person of interest in the case.

The man is no longer facing charges in relation to the stabbing but remains in custody on an unrelated warrant for failing to attend court in relation to a robbery and breach of probation charge, say police.

Meanwhile, investigators are still searching for the actual suspect, whom they say is a man between the ages of 20 to 30. He was last seen wearing a dark hooded sweater and dark baseball cap or toque.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Victoria Police Department non-emergency line at 250-995-7654.
