Mounties on Pender Island are searching for a woman accused of breaking into a local Home Hardware and setting fire to a lumber storage area, causing around $10,000 in damage.
The fire was reported to Pender Island Fire Department just before 5 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 9, police said in a news release Friday.
Police deemed it a case of break and enter and arson, discovering surveillance footage that showed a person breaking into the store and starting the fire.
Members of the Island District RCMP Forensic Identification Service were also called in to examine the scene of the arson.
Since then, investigators say they’ve determined the suspect took a ferry from Swartz Bay to Pender Island around 6:30-7 p.m. on Oct. 8, the night before the fire.
They describe her as a white woman with short brown hair who was wearing a white sweater, long black pants and a black backpack.
Anyone with information on the arson is asked to call Outer Gulf Islands RCMP at 250-629-6171.
