Mounties are on the hunt for a suspected purse snatcher.

According to the Nanaimo RCMP, a woman was sitting at the Country Club Mall’s food court on May 2 when at around 5:30 p.m., someone stole her purse, which was hanging over the back of her chair.

Mall surveillance video shows a person calmly walking up to a woman sitting down at a table at the food court and grabbing a purse that is hung over the back of the woman’s chair.

Mounties say the woman didn’t notice the purse was gone until she stood up, at which time, she began searching the immediate areas and then reported the incident to mall security.

A security guard found her purse on the ground outside JYSK with everything inside except her banking card, which the woman cancelled immediately.

Mounties are now hoping members of the public will be able to identify the suspect, who is described as a woman between the ages of 40 and 55 with dark hair tied in a bun and black glasses. At the time of the incident, she was wearing a blue medical face mask, black jacket, black pants and carrying a paperback book.

“The still image of the suspect captured on CCTV cameras shows her carrying a paperback book. Investigators believe that she may have been sitting in the food court prior to the theft and therefore someone may remember her,” Const. Gary O’Brien, media spokesperson for the Nanaimo RCMP, said in a press release.

Anyone has information is asked to contact the Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file # 2022-14698.
