A cyclist was found in a ditch and later pronounced dead on Left Road on Jan. 3.

Comox Valley RCMP say a collision did not cause the death of a Courtenay cyclist who was found in a ditch on Left Road on Jan. 3.

The incident happened on a straight stretch of Left Road, south of Whitaker Road. A passerby found the critically-injured man lying in the southbound ditch.

Police say they responded to a call at 5:20 p.m. of a cyclist in distress. The 67-year-old man was rushed to hospital by ambulance but pronounced dead on arrival.

“At this time we can confirm that there was no collision that caused this tragic incident.” Const. Rob Gardner, Comox Valley RCMP media relations officer, said in a release on Monday.

The investigation into the man’s death has been turned over to the BC Coroner’s Service.
