Police arrest man who allegedly threatened security officers with knife at Bay Centre

A police service dog helped officers arrest a man who threatened Bay Centre security officers with a knife Tuesday night in downtown Victoria, according to VicPD.

Officers were called to the Bay Centre in the 1100-block of Douglas Street after receiving a report that a man armed with a knife threatened security officers.

The security officers confronted him after he had jumped on several patio tables outside the mall, police said.

After issuing a threat, the man fled on foot.

Police and a canine unit tracked the man down to the 1400-block of Douglas Street, where he initially refused to comply with directions.

“However, the deployment and presence of ICS Police Service Dog Hitch compelled the man to surrender to police,” VicPD said in a statement.

The man was taken into custody and transported to police cells, then later released with a court date and conditions. He faces charges of assault with a weapon and uttering threats.
