Pedestrian dies after collision near Nanaimo Airport Friday

Ladysmith RCMP say a pedestrian died after a collision on Friday.

Ladysmith RCMP say a pedestrian is dead after a collision early in the morning of Aug. 14 near the Nanaimo Airport.

Police say at around 1:30 a.m., they received a report of an abandoned 911 call in the area near the intersection of Hallberg Road and Timberlands Road.

Officers went to the area in an attempt to find the caller but did not find anyone at the intersection.

Police then came across a stopped vehicle near the entrance to the Nanaimo Airport. According to police, people on scene were giving first aid to a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle. BC Ambulance paramedics also responded.

Police said the pedestrian succumbed to injuries and the BC Coroners Service has been notified.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation, police said. No other details about the crash or the pedestrian have been released.

The Trans-Canada Highway was closed for several hours Friday morning while police investigated.
