Some changes are coming to CHEK News with a familiar face returning to take over the six o’clock anchor desk.

Award-winning anchor and reporter Paul Haysom is taking over as anchor of CHEK News at 6.

Haysom returns to CHEK after spending the last decade working for Global News, most recently as the morning show anchor at Global BC. Longtime CHEK viewers will remember Haysom, who began his broadcast career at CHEK in 2007 as a sports anchor and reporter.

Since then, he’s won multiple Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awards, including in 2021 for his coverage of the Lytton wildfire. Now he’s ready to get back to his roots in Victoria with his wife, Nikki, and their dog, Fuller.

“I am very excited to rejoin the incredibly talented team at CHEK by making the move from breakfast to dinner as the 6 p.m. anchor. The chance to work with new and familiar faces on Vancouver Island is an opportunity I simply can’t pass up!” said Haysom.

“As an employee-owned organization that is ingrained in the community, CHEK is well positioned for the future by embracing the evolving media landscape. No matter the platform, CHEK’s commitment to strong local journalism will always be at its core,” he added.

“I am honoured to play a key role in that vision.”

Haysom, who grew up in Central Saanich, replaces current 6 p.m. anchor Joe Perkins who will be stepping away from the anchor desk to focus on his new role as CHEK’s news director. Perkins joined CHEK in 2019 and oversaw the transition of the six o’clock news from thirty minutes to a full hour, adding popular segments to the newscast including Order Up! and Island Rewind.

“I’m thrilled that Paul is coming home to Vancouver Island and returning to CHEK. He’s a talented writer and broadcaster and understands our station’s commitment to local news,” said Perkins.

“We’re thrilled to have Joe Perkins taking on responsibility for all our news operations as News Director at CHEK,” said CHEK’s General Manager Rob Germain.

“While viewers will miss seeing Joe regularly on our six o’clock newscast, Paul Haysom, who many viewers will be familiar with, will be a great fit and will further strengthen our on-air news team.”

Expect to see Haysom behind the anchor desk at six o’clock sometime soon.
