A 52-year-old man from Coombs has died after a fatal head-on vehicle collision in Qualicum Beach on Thursday afternoon.

Oceanside RCMP received the call about a two-vehicle crash on Rupert Road, just west of Jones Street, at about 3:15 p.m.

The initial investigation suggests an SUV heading westbound suddenly left its lane and entered the eastbound lane, where it collided with a pickup truck, according to police.

The driver of the pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. There was no one else in the vehicle, says the RCMP.

Police say the driver of the other vehicle, a 35-year-old man from Parksville, was also alone in his car, and was airlifted to hospital with injuries and is in stable condition.

Oceanside RCMP is still determining the cause of the crash and says it is processing evidence and reports from specialists. There is no word yet if alcohol was a factor.

“We would like to thank all those that witnessed this tragedy and stayed to provide statements and accounts to police,” said Cpl. Jesse Foreman of the Oceanside RCMP.

Anyone that witnessed the head-on collision and can provide any evidence is asked to contact Cst. Parish of Oceanside RCMP at (250) 248-6111.
