Saanich Police said late Thursday two men, who were the subjects of a search of suspicious individuals who were possibly carrying a weapon, have been located and there is no public risk.

A tweet from Saanich Police just before 10 p.m. Thursday said, “Both males have been identified. There were no weapons involved and no risk to the public. Thank you for your patience while we investigated.”

In a media release issued just before 7 p.m. on Thursday, Saanich Police Department said officers were searching for two male suspects wearing army type outfits in the area of Mount Tolmie to McKenzie Avenue, that were possibly carrying a long gun.

Officers had already arrested one suspect, and were continuing the search on the ground with help from an RCMP helicopter in the air.

But just before 9 p.m., Victoria Police said its officers were deployed to the downtown core for a report of two men, and possibly carrying a firearm.

About an hour later, Saanich Police confirmed the two men had been identified, which was followed by a tweet from VicPD, saying officers located and spoke with a man, who was the same person from the earlier call in Saanich.

Police added there did not appear to be a criminal incident.

This comes after Saanich Police arrested one person, following reports about a suspicious individual with a long gun in a carrying case, just one block away from a deadly bank shootout that took place on Tuesday.

Police were called to the area of Richmond Road and Pear Street Thursday afternoon after receiving a report of a suspicious person carrying a long gun in a carrying case.

Police said it was unrelated to Tuesday’s police shooting at the Bank of Montreal on Shelbourne Street, just down the road.

Out of an abundance of caution due to the recent shooting, however, police responded with several officers.

Multiple witnesses told CHEK News they saw police in the neighbourhood with guns drawn.
