Oceanside RCMP said they arrested a 44-year-old Parksville man Thursday morning after they received reports he was wielding a machete in a business, a trailer and a home.

According to police, at around 10:30 a.m., the man walked into a business on Allsbrook Road wielding a large machete. Police said he smashed the machete on the counter and left the shop on a motorcycle.

Police said the man broke into a travel trailer at a neighbouring business and caused severe damage. He then went into a home on the property by allegedly using a machete to smash a sliding glass door. A mother and her two young children were home at the time. They were startled and quickly left out the front door.

Police said the suspect continued to smash items in the home and jump on the roof. He was summoned down from the roof by police and arrested.

The man was not known to any of the business owner or the mother and her children in the area.

The suspect told police he was mentally unstable due to excessive drug use. The man has been taken for a psychiatric assessment. Police said he will be held for several charges for court.
