Highway 17 (Pat Bay Highway) at Haliburton Road was down to one lane northbound Monday afternoon due to a crash involving three vehicles.
Saanich Police spokesperson Const. Markus Anastasiades said the serious crash was reported around 12:19 p.m.
One person was taken to hospital with potentially life-threatening injuries, but police say that person’s condition has improved to serious, but stable condition.
Police say they’ve learned a white SUV heading north on the highway approached the intersection at Haliburton Road.
Authorities say the white vehicle rear-ended a blue SUV, which then hit the back of a semi-truck stopped in traffic.
The person transported to hospital in critical condition was in the white SUV.
Police say two other occupants at the scene were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The northbound lane reopened around 2:15 p.m. after lengthy traffic delays.
Saanich Police says the exact cause of the crash is still under investigation, but driver impairment is not a factor and all persons involved are cooperating with investigators.
