North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP nab speeding, impaired drivers during weekend traffic check

A recent traffic enforcement operation on Vancouver Island saw police issue a slew of warnings and violation tickets, as officers nabbed several speeding and impaired drivers.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP teamed up with officers from the BC Highway Patrol’s police dog unit to conduct the operation in Cowichan Bay and Duncan, and along the Trans-Canada Highway.

RCMP say over 1,000 drivers were checked for sobriety and Motor Vehicle Act compliance, leading officers to issue 30 written warnings, 28 violation tickets and 15 notice and orders. One excessive speed and two impaired driving investigations were also launched.

During the operation, officers also caught three prohibited drivers, plus two who were violating the Cannabis Act. RCMP say that resulted in the seizure of 480 grams of dried cannabis and 45 packages of edibles.

“These traffic initiatives are routinely undertaken to ensure compliance with the Motor Vehicle Act and Road Safety for all motorists, as a part of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP’s commitment to public safety,” Cpl. Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the BC RCMP, said in a news release. 

BC Highway Patrol has nine units patrolling the Island, all following a mandate to reduce the number of serious, fatal collisions on provincial highways, RCMP add.
