Island Health says construction of a new residential care facility in Duncan will begin in March, scheduled to open in November 2019.

Island Health has announced plans for a new residential care facility to be opened in Duncan in November 2019.

Island Health is working with H&H Total Care Services to bring the facility to the Cowichan Valley, which is scheduled to start construction next March.

The new site will be called The Hamlets at Duncan and have 80 publicly funded beds and eight private, complex care beds.

“When we looked at population growth rates in the Cowichan Valley and factored in construction costs and timelines, it was decided a larger centre from the onset offered greater value to the taxpayers who fund care and would better serve the community now and into the future,” Director of Residential Services Tim Orr said in a release.

Island Health says units will be grouped together in neighbourhoods and feature a home-like design.

The facility will be on the corner of York Road and Beverly Street.
