The District of Tofino has a new mayor.

Dan Law, a contemporary installation artist, will become the next mayor of Tofino after he received the most votes in a byelection held on March 6, according to preliminary election results.

Law received a total of 545 votes, beating out the next closest mayoral candidate, J.J. Belanger, by more than 350 votes. He also received the most votes of any mayoral and council candidate.

Cathy Thicke and Jacky Challenger were elected as councillors, besting fellow candidates Ali Sawyer, Lindsay Whitefield, Zak Cross, Chris Heisterman and Stephen Ashton.

The byelection was triggered when then-mayor Josie Osborne resigned after she was elected MLA for Mid-Island Pacific Rim riding last October.
