Crystal Giesbrecht of Nanaimo won $500,000 in the Jan. 15 BC49 lottery draw by matching all four Extra numbers.

While some people may go a lifetime without winning a lottery prize, one Nanaimo woman is a big winner after just a week and a half.

The BC Lottery Corporation says Nanaimo’s Crystal Giesbrecht matched all four Extra numbers in the BC49 draw on Jan. 15 to win $500,000.

“Some of my co-workers and I decided to go in on a group play a few weeks ago when the Lotto Max jackpot was $70 million,” Giesbrecht said.

“Since then I had been buying tickets on the Lotto! App.”

Giesbrecht says she will use the winnings to pay off her car and will continue to work at a Nanaimo credit union, but a big vacation is coming for her March birthday.

“I’ve never been to Mexico before, so that should be a fun birthday!”

BCLC says Giesbrecht was getting ready for work at home when she found out she was a winner.

“I checked the ticket and it said $500,000,” Giesbrecht said.

“It was so surreal. I woke up my daughter and then I woke up my parents and then I went to work right after. I felt sick all day that day!”
