Nanaimo’s Bastion Bridge will be closed starting May 21 to traffic for a renewal and seismic retrofit project.

Vehicles on the downtown structure will not flow for six weeks as crews replace the concrete deck.

Pedestrian access will still be permitted on the route.

Bus routes that will be impacted will be temporarily relocated to 1 Port Drive subject to RDN Board approval.

On April 8, the transit exchange was relocated to Front Street at Port Place Mall due to the project.

“Detours will be in place for vehicles travelling in the downtown area. We ask that drivers slow down, obey all signage and watch out for workers and flagpersons,” said Marcus van Zyl, Construction Project Manager for the City of Nanaimo in a statement.

The bridge was originally constructed in 1936, a complete retrofit was completed in 1978.
