Islanders will have a local to cheer for Thursday when Jeopardy! airs on CHEK at 7:30 p.m.

Whitney Wood, originally from Northwestern Ontario, is a History Professor and Canada’s Research Chair at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. Her research specializes in gender history and the history of medicine.

On Thursday, she’ll become the latest Canadian to pick up the buzzer on the popular game show.

Prior to the show, Whitney wasn’t able to give away any spoilers but she was able to answer a few questions heading into the match.

Have you always been a Jeopardy! fan?

Yes, definitely – for as long as I can remember. I unsuccessfully auditioned for the “teen tournament” in 2004. Watching Jeopardy! is a bit of a daily ritual, especially during the school year.

How long have you been trying to be a contestant?

I started the audition process in the fall of 2019, and was originally scheduled for an in-person audition in March 2020 but for obvious pandemic reasons, that didn’t happen, and I completed the rest of the process online. I was shocked when I got the call to be on earlier this spring.

What were you most nervous or excited about heading into the show?

With all the uncertainties surrounding COVID, I was just happy to be able to get the chance at it.

Any plans for watching the show on Thursday night?

I’m camping for the weekend in Radium Hot Springs, so will hope to find some good WI-FI to watch as soon as I can. After that, I’ll be unplugging and enjoying the weekend!

Wood is the second British Columbian to appear on Jeopardy! in the past month. Tessa Matsuzaki, a graphic designer from Vancouver was on the show on June 8th. Her appearance came a month after Canada’s Mattea Roach made Jeopardy! history with her 23-game win streak.

You can watch Wood’s performance on CHEK weeknights at 7:30 p.m.
