WatchNanaimo RCMP are investigating after reports of an attempted abduction of an 8-year-old girl.

One suspect is being sought after an 8-year-old girl reported that a man attempted to grab her while she rode her bike home from school in Nanaimo Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the incident occurred at around 3 p.m. on Bradley Street, in the central part of Nanaimo.

The girl told police that she had left school and was cycling eastbound on Bradley Street when a man suddenly appeared. She said the man got out of his truck and then was standing beside her. He reportedly asked her if she wanted to see something in his truck.

The man then allegedly tried to grab her but she said she was able to kick him. She then got back on her bike and rode all the way home. She told her mother, who called the police and reported the incident.

“The young lady did everything she needed to do to remove herself from a dangerous situation and should be proud of her actions,” Const. Gary O’Brien, media relations officer with the Nanaimo RCMP, said in a statement.

The man is described by police as white, with a dark beard and dark hair and wearing sunglasses. The girl was unable to say how old the man was or what he was wearing.

The man was seen driving a red pickup truck with a white strip but no description was provided of the make, model or age of the pickup truck.
