Nanaimo RCMP is seeking help from the public to locate a man who allegedly robbed a local grocery store at knifepoint Thursday.

Around 5:40 p.m., Mounties were called to the Superette Foods at 687 Albert St. following an armed robbery, according to RCMP in a news release.

An employee told investigators on scene that a man wearing a mask had entered the store and, knife in hand, demanded the clerk hand over cash from the till.

“After receiving an undisclosed amount of money, the suspect left on foot and was last seen running toward Nicol Street,” said RCMP in the release.

Front-line officers patrolled the area but were unable to locate the suspect. Officers also reviewed security video showing the suspect maskless just prior to entering the store.

The man, who looked to be in his mid-30s, stands approximately 5’10” tall and weighs about 175 pounds. He has heavy stubble and was wearing a dark hoodie and gloves at the time of the incident, police say.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345, quoting file #2023-3003.
