Nanaimo RCMP is searching for a driver suspected of stealing a car before rolling it off the Old Island Highway, near Dorman Road, Wednesday afternoon. He then ran away.

It happened shortly before 1:30 p.m.

A white car was travelling northbound on the highway when it rolled off the right side of the road and into a grassy median.

Witnesses say the driver then ran away carrying three red Hilti bags.

A driver that stopped at the crash scene has reported to police he took the driver from the crashed car to Country Club Mall.

Police say a taxi then picked up the car theft suspect.
