The provincial government has awarded Nanaimo-based Windley Contracting Ltd. the $14.9-million contract to complete permanent repairs on the Malahat, to resolve the damage caused by floods in November.

In a statement, Rob Fleming, minister of transportation and infrastructure, says the contract for repairs to the Malahat Tunnel Hill segment of Highway 1 is the first contract awarded for permanent repairs for the damage due to the floods.

“This first contract award for permanent repairs following last fall’s catastrophic flooding marks an important milestone as the province continues to build back better,” said Fleming.

“The Malahat is a critical connection for residents, businesses, emergency services and the transportation of goods between the mid-Island and the Capital Region. This project ensures safety for drivers and increases resiliency during future extreme climate events.”

The work is expected to start this summer, and be completed in summer 2023.

Damage to approximately 50 metres of the northbound lane north of Finlayson Arm Road, drainage, and addressing slope stability are some of the issues to be repaired.

Additionally, an 80-metre retaining wall will be replaced to secure the slope to prevent damage in the event of future significant rainfall.

The province says the goal is for the majority of the work to be completed during the night to reduce traffic impacts during the day, and advanced notice of traffic disruptions will be provided on DriveBC.
