Former Victoria Member of Parliament Murray Rankin has announced he is seeking the BC NDP nomination in the provincial Oak Bay – Gordon Head riding.

“I will be honest: this was not an easy decision. But after listening to the views of many people in our community, I concluded that the stakes were too high to sit on the sidelines,” Rankin said in a release about his nomination.

“The pandemic has changed all of our lives; the challenges it has created require urgent attention. At a time when people are counting on the government to stand with them, we can’t risk turning back the clock on all progress we’ve made.”

Rankin became an MP for the federal riding of Victoria back in 2012. He was elected again in 2015 but did not run again for the 2019 federal election.

The BC Liberals announced on Aug. 31 that lawyer Roxane Helme was their candidate for Oak Bay-Gordon Head.

“I can’t wait to get to work earning the support of the residents of Oak Bay-Gordon Head,” Helme said in a release about her candidacy.

“Andrew Wilkinson and the BC Liberals are the only team that will deliver an economic recovery that benefits all British Columbians, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

Former Green Party Andrew Weaver, the current MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, stepped aside in January to sit as an independent in the legislature. Weaver said in 2019 he would not run for reelection to the B.C. legislature.

Sonia Furstenau, who represents the Cowichan Valley riding, was elected BC Green Party leader on Sept. 14.
