A man who fled the scene of a fatal crash near Ladysmith over the weekend is planning on turning himself in, say police.

BC RCMP Cpl. Mike Halskov told CHEK in a brief interview Monday morning that the man has connected with law enforcement on Vancouver Island and will be turning himself in later today.

The identity of the suspect was not disclosed.

“The suspect has spoken with an officer from the South Vancouver Island Traffic Services this morning and is apparently planning on turning himself in today,” said Halskov.

A Ford F-150 pickup truck was travelling southbound on Trans-Canada Highway, near Oyster Sto-Lo Road, on Saturday when it went over the centre median and collided with a northbound SUV. Another pickup truck, which was towing a trailer, was also involved in the crash.

The driver of the SUV, a 35-year-old female, died at the scene while the male driver of the Ford F-150 reportedly fled the scene by stealing a nearby vehicle, according to BC RCMP.

Halskov told CHEK that police located the vehicle that had been stolen in an undisclosed area south of Ladysmith, but north of Duncan. “It wasn’t too far away,” he said.
