More than 1,400 hydro customers in Campbell River started the new year in the dark after a two-vehicle collision on Alder Street cut the power.

BC Hydro said a motor vehicle accident was to blame for the outage that affected 1435 customers roughly south of 7th Avenue, north of Holm Road, west of the Island Highway and east of Mcphedran Road, plus another 24 customers in the 500-block of Colwyn Street and seven in the 200-block of Evergreen Road.

The power went out around 2:20 a.m. Sunday for most people, while those on Colwyn Street saw their electricity go out at 8:49 a.m., according to BC Hydro’s outage list.

“The reason why you might not have power,” Hansen wrote in the post, noting that the photo, which shows both police and a fire truck on scene, was taken around 3 a.m.

BC Emergency Health Services tells CHEK News that paramedics were called to the accident at 2:26 p.m., and one person was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries.

BC Hydro expected the power to be restored by noon.
