A youth cyclist who was killed when he was struck by a vehicle has been identified online as an 11-year-old Mill Bay Nature School student.
A pair of GoFundMe campaigns publicly mourned Avery Oye, who was killed in the collision just after 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 12.
Police say they believe the youth failed to stop at a stop sign and made a left onto Benko Road northbound. They say the driver of the truck wasn’t able to stop in time and struck him, resulting in his death.
Mill Bay Nature School’s Eagle Clan said it was “devastated” to learn of the news in an online fundraiser aimed at supporting Oye’s family.
“Our MBNS School Community is so deeply heartbroken, hearing the news that one of our students, Avery Oye, has passed away after a tragic accident this past Monday,” it wrote.
Money raised will go toward supporting the family as they grieve, and the school said it also hopes to create a “meaningful tribute” to the 11-year-old on school grounds.
“We don’t know what this looks like yet, but as with every big decision at MBNS, we will enlist the hearts and minds of our sacred children who knew and loved Avery to come up with a way to honour his memory,” the school said.
A second fundraiser launched by Petra Hansman called Oye “a brilliant young boy of 11 who was greatly creative.”
Vancouver Island Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service is aiding the investigation, but RCMP has said it does not appear to be a criminal matter.
Victim Services was called out immediately, and anyone who saw this incident and is having difficulties is encouraged to reach out to them, or the Shawnigan Lake RCMP for assistance
said Shawnigan Lake RCMP detachment Cmdr. Tim Desaulniers. The driver is cooperating with the investigation, and initially, it does not appear to be any criminality in this tragic collision.
The BC Coroners Service is also investigating the death.
