Victoria Police disarmed a man at gunpoint after he allegedly threatened Victoria Bylaw officers with a shovel on Thursday morning.

In a report issued on Thursday, police say the incident took place just before 9 a.m. in the area of Cecelia Ravine Park, which is located close to the 400-block of Cecelia Road.

VicPD says that special duty officers – specifically assigned to assist the Victoria Bylaw officers – were notified of the incident regarding a man confronting the city staff while wielding a shovel.

After alerting police, the bylaw officers retreated to a safe location and awaited the arrival of the special duty officers.

When VicPD arrived on scene, the man confronted the officers with the shovel as well. Police say he initially did not comply with the officers’ directions. The non-compliance led to one officer drawing their service pistol and another displayed a conductive energy device (CED).

Once the weapons were drawn, the man dropped the shovel and retreated to a nearby tent.

Officers followed the man to the tent and arrested him without further incident.

Police say that no one was injured during the confrontations.

An investigation is currently underway into the incident and anyone with information, who has yet to speak with police, is being asked to call the VicPD report desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.
