A man who was found in medical distress while in custody at the Campbell River RCMP detachment has died, and the Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia is investigating if police actions contributed to his death.

On June 23 around 10:45 a.m., RCMP officers arrested a man for breach of probation, and he was held in custody at the RCMP detachment.

At 11 p.m., an on-duty guard found the man unresponsive and in medical distress.

Officers provided first aid until paramedics arrived and transported him to hospital, where he later died.

RCMP has not released further information about the man who died, or the cause of his death.

IIO is conducting an investigation, and RCMP say no further information will be released by police while the investigation is underway.
