A man alleged to have thrown coffee at a McDonald’s employee in Nanaimo is on the loose and police are hoping the public can help identify him.

On Thursday, Jan. 12, around 9:30 a.m., a man was caught sleeping at one of the tables inside the restaurant, located on Bowen Road, prompting an employee to go over and wake him up, Mounties were told.

However, the man wasn’t happy about that.

“The individual apparently took exception to this as he began to loudly swear at the employee,” RCMP said in a release. “A supervisor heard the commotion and told him to leave the restaurant. The suspect approached this employee and, from approximately 20 feet, threw his coffee at them.”

The employee managed to avoid being struck by the coffee, which was cold, and the man left the premises, according to police in the release.

He was caught on security camera, stands 5’9″ tall, has a medium build and is clean shaven with short dark hair. At the time of the incident, he was wearing a light brown jacket and a dark baseball cap and was carrying a black backpack.

Anyone who can identify the man is asked to call Nanaimo RCMP’s non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file #2023-1280.
