Son held under Mental Health Act after death of woman on Salt Spring Island

The 22-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the suspicious death of his mother on Salt Spring Island has been released from police custody and apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

Police also confirmed on Friday the identity of the woman who died on Salt Spring Island as 47-year-old Heather Jones. Members of the community had confirmed Jones’ identity on Thursday and also said she was the owner of Amber Cab Co.

According to police, Jones was found dead inside a duplex on Maliview Drive shortly before 12 p.m. on Dec. 6. Foul play is suspected in the death, police said. CHEK News has learned that it was Jones’ son, Martin Vandenberg, who was arrested.

A forensic autopsy is scheduled for Dec. 11. Investigators are trying to piece together Jones’ last movements in the hours and days before her death.
