Saanich police have made an arrest in connection with a sexual assault north of the Uptown Shopping Centre on Aug. 18.

Police said the assault took place in the 3600 block of Highway 17. According to police, the male suspect in the sexual assault was recently acquainted with the person who reported the incident.

The suspect was arrested on Aug. 22 after he was located by uniformed and plain-clothes officers. He was held in custody to attend court and will remain in custody until his trial.

Saanich police also said the social media reports that suggested the sexual assault occurred at the tent city in Regina Park or that the assault was committed by a resident of tent city were false.

“The suspect was not known to be a resident of the Regina Park Encampment, and it has been proven that the assault did not occur there,” Saanich police said in a release.
