A man has been arrested after an unprovoked attack on a vendor in Victoria’s Inner Harbour.

Officers received a call to the intersection of Government and Belleville streets of a man swinging a large metal pole at people and vendors’ displays around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Victoria Police.

They say the suspect had assaulted a vendor’s display with the metal pole and then assaulted the vendor and left.

The man still kept the metal pole after police arrived at the Lower Causeway, according to VicPD. They say officers used voice commands, with a firearm and conductive energy weapon drawn.

Police say the man was arrested after not following police directions and was taken into custody. The 31-year-old faces recommended charges of assault with a weapon, mischief, and breach of release order, according to police.

VicPD say the vendor suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the assault.

Victoria Police are asking anyone with information to call the non-emergency line at 250-995-7654.
