A man was arrested Friday night after he allegedly drove a minivan into an occupied police vehicle during a chase in Victoria.

According to the Victoria Police Department, the incident happened shortly after 11:30 p.m. when one of their officers was nearly hit by a minivan travelling at high speed on Finlayson Street.

The officer, who en route to an unrelated call and was travelling in the opposite lanes at the time of the incident, decided to pursue the minivan, which continued to drive dangerously.

During the pursuit, the minivan eventually drove into the parking lot of multi-unit temporary housing facility in the 3000-block of Blanshard Street.

Once inside the parking lot, VicPD say the minivan rammed the officer’s vehicle, fled the scene and then crashed into a cement retaining wall a short distance away.

Officers, with the help of Saanich PD, arrested the man, who was transported to hospital by paramedics and later transported to cells at VicPD to await court.

Meanwhile, the officer whose vehicle was rammed by the suspect suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“We are thinking of the officer who was involved in the incident last night and their family,” said chief Del Manak in a press release. “We are thankful that the officer was not seriously injured or killed in this incident. However, this is a reminder of the risks our officers face everyday while working to keep our community safe.”

Detectives with VicPD’s Investigative Services Division are continuing the investigation.
