A man has been taken into custody after he allegedly threatened, assaulted and held a woman against her will in a downtown Victoria condo.

Victoria Police say officers responded around 9 p.m. on Nov. 8 to a report that a man was holding a woman against her will in a condo building.

When officers arrived, they found the woman and the suspect barricaded in a unit. The building was evacuated and officers began to de-escalate the incident.

The Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team, crisis negotiators, the Integrated Canine Service and VicPD’s Investigative Services Division had officers attend.

The woman was able to exit safely after crisis negotiators worked for several hours with the suspect.

He remained in the suite until just after 1 a.m., when GVERT officers used a noise-making device and voice commands to convince him to surrender.

He was taken into custody without incident and VicPD says he wasn’t injured.

The man faces recommended charges of assault and was held in custody after appearing in court.

The investigation into the incident continues. VicPD asks anyone with information to call the VicPD Report Desk at (250) 995-7654 extension 1.
