Light Up Ladysmith, Sidney Sparkles Christmas events cancelled due to COVID-19

Town of Ladysmith

Two popular Christmas events have been cancelled for 2021 due to COVID-19 pandemic concerns.

Organizers announced this week both Light Up Ladysmith and Sidney Sparkles Christmas Parade will not be happening because of caution surrounding COVID-19.

Festival of Lights organizers said in a press release Light Up events could not proceed and cancelling it was the only responsible option.

“The decision to cancel Light Up for this year has been made with a view towards our responsibilities to this community,” said a press release from Festival of Lights Thursday.

“Potentially, the health of our members, various service groups, the many volunteers and our community could be placed at risk by staging a large public gathering. Festival of Lights determined that cancellation of these festivities was the only responsible option under these circumstances.”

The annual public setup day in November has also been cancelled.

Peninsula Celebrations Society announced Sunday the Sidney Sparkles Christmas Parade has been postponed because of concerns surrounding the pandemic and hope the parade will return in the future.

Although Light Up has been cancelled for the year, Festival of Lights says lights will still be set up on rooftops in October and November for the public to enjoy.
