Two women who went missing on Quadra Island Wednesday night have been found safe.

On Thursday, search and rescue teams from all over Vancouver Island and from the Lower Mainland were looking for the women. They were found by a volunteer at around 1 p.m. in the Surge Narrows Road area on the northeastern tip of Quadra Island, close to Read Island.

Paul Berry with Comox Search and Rescue says the women, aged 69 and 70, were reported missing Wednesday night after they failed to return from a planned hour-long walk.

The Ford Explorer the woman were in was parked nearby on Surge Narrows Road.

Berry says 11 search and rescue teams were involved from Vancouver Island and another five from the Lower Mainland.

About 70 search and rescue personnel were taking part in the search for the women, along with Quadra Island volunteers.

Search crews retrieved the women who were conscious but cold.
