Langford Fire, emergency crews respond to Freon leak at Costco

The Langford Fire Department, along with West Shore RCMP and BC Emergency Health Services, have responded to an incident at Costco on Tuesday morning.

According to Langford Fire, crews were called to the store at approximately 9 a.m. on the morning of February 16 after the fire alarm went off.

Upon arriving on location, firefighters were able to determine there was a Freon leak from the refrigeration system within the store.

Multiple trucks responded to the incident and crews were able to evacuate the store efficiently without incident.

Authorities say on-site crews assisted with ventilation to keep the Freon isolated in one area while waiting for a technician to come and seal the leak.

“It’s not great for people to be breathing it in,” said Langford Fire Chief, Chris Aubrey.

Aubrey noted that the technician was quick to arrive at Costco and the whole incident was able to be wrapped up within approximately 35 minutes.

The Langford Fire Department says that this is the second time within a matter of weeks that a Freon leak occurred at the store. The previous incident occurred after hours at the facility.

Following safety checks, officials have given the green light for employees and customers to return to the store.
