Langford firefighters were able to quickly extinguish a rapidly growing bush fire on the E&N rail line Tuesday afternoon.

Langford Fire Rescue responded to the fire near Jacklin Road and Station Avenue at around 2:15 p.m. By 2:45 p.m. the fire was out and crews were mopping up the area.

According to the fire department, the bush fire was burning in two different directions along the E&N rail line, growing to more than 60 metres in length in the dry grass and bush beside the tracks.

No one was injured and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Hot and dry conditions are expected to continue on Vancouver Island Wednesday and Thursday.

A special weather statement is in effect for Greater Victoria, inland Vancouver Island, west Vancouver Island, the Southern Gulf Islands and east Vancouver Island, from Courtenay to Campbell River, Duncan to Nanaimo and Nanoose Bay to Fanny Bay. An upper ridge of high pressure will draw warm air northward from the United States this week, according to Environment Canada.

And as of Tuesday morning, much of Vancouver Island was under a special air quality statement (smoky skies bulletin) due to the wildfire smoke from Washington state.
