Ladysmith opens cooling centre amid weekend heat wave

Another Vancouver Island municipality has opened a cooling centre amid a heat wave over the weekend.

The Town of Ladysmith has opened a cooling centre at Frank Jameson Community Centre on 6th Avenue. They say the centre will be open on Jul. 31 from Noon until 8 p.m.

The cooling centre is among seven others listed on the Ladysmith website, including locations in Chemainus, Crofton, Duncan, Lake Cowichan and Mill Bay. Each of the centres will provide a cool space and water, according to Ladysmith. They say the centres are open until 8 p.m. on Jul. 31.

Environment Canada issued a heat warning for east Vancouver Island this week predicting daytime temperatures nearing 30 degrees Celcius, with overnight lows of 16 to 19 degrees.

The heat wave is expected to continue into Saturday night, according to the weather agency.
