While one Vancouver Island city is preparing for the return of its Canada Day celebrations, another is gearing up to hold them for the first time.

The Campbell River Rotary Canada Day Parade is returning after taking a few years off due to the pandemic.

“Canada Day 2022 is going to be a very special year for our community as we are finally able to gather safely in-person,” a news release says. “Get together with family or friends or co-workers and decorate your float — drive, ride, walk, dance or march your way through the streets and show off your community spirit in the 2022 Campbell River Rotary Canada Day Parade!”

There are also plans for prizes including first, second and third place float entry, best children’s entry and best animal entry. The prizes are yet to be announced.

Anyone interested in having a float in the parade can sign up on the Campbell River Canada Day website.

And, for the first time, the City of Langford is planning to host a Canada Day celebration at Starlight Stadium.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with a variety of free activities including a pancake breakfast (by donation), live music with local musician Vince Vaccaro as the headline, face painting, a hot wing eating contest, back yard games on the turf, artist painting demonstrations, and a blue-ribbon pie baking contest.

“Langford residents have been requesting a family orientated Canada Day event for a long time now, and I’m glad the City could deliver on that request,” said Langford Mayor Stew Young. “It has been a very challenging time over the last couple of years, and now more than ever we need to connect with friends and neighbours and get back to normal.”

At the end of the evening, a family-friendly movie will be played on an inflatable screen.

There will be a concession and beer garden open all day.

Langford will also be holding celebrations for the city’s 30th anniversary on July 2 and 3 at the Jordie Lunn Bike Park.

Events will include the first annual Langford Bike Fest, including the Live Like Jordie Enduro (part of the Island Cup Enduro Series) on Saturday and the Red Bull UCI Pump Track World Championship Qualifier on Sunday.
