Island Health declares COVID outbreak at long-term care home in Campbell River

There is an outbreak of the novel coronavirus at a long-term care facility in Campbell River.

Island Health on Wednesday afternoon declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Discovery Harbour, a long-term care home in Campbell River, after three staff members tested posted for the virus.

The health authority says no residents have tested positive and that the three staff members are currently isolating at home.

“During this time, Island Health will have additional presence at the site to take any further actions required, support the facility and answer questions from staff, residents and family members,” the health authority said in a media release.

The health authority says admissions and transfers will be on hold while the outbreak is in effect and that resident movement between neighbourhoods will not occur. They also say staffing levels will be maintained but social visitors will be restricted, although essential visits may occur.

Discovery Harbour is owned and operated by Park Place Seniors Living and Island Health says it is working with management and staff to identify anyone who may have been exposed.

“At this time, no residents are experiencing symptoms and the risk remains low. Communication with residents, families and staff is underway,” Island Health said.
