RCMP say a Vancouver Island motorist think officers would ask him to take a breathalyzer test because of COVID.

A Vancouver Island motorist has learned the hard way that just because there is an ongoing pandemic, it doesn’t mean police won’t ask for a breath sample.

Port McNeill RCMP say officers recently pulled over a motorist for suspected impaired driving after a witness reported the vehicle “cruising” through a school zone.

When officers asked for a breath sample, the detachment says the driver was caught off guard because he didn’t think he would be asked to provide one during the pandemic.

“The driver didn’t think we would breath test him due to COVID-19. He was wrong,” Port McNeill RCMP said in a post on social media.

Eventually, the driver took the test and was allegedly 3.5 times the legal limit.

“His vehicle was impounded, licence revoked and he will be appearing in provincial court in March to face criminal impaired driving charges,” the detachment said.

Port McNeill RCMP say impaired driving continues to be an issue in the community.
