Two people were taken to hospital following a single-vehicle crash that closed the southbound lanes of Highway 17 in Saanich.

Saanich Police Department says on Sunday morning a Chrysler 300 sedan was driving southbound on Patricia Bay Highway — also known as Highway 17 — on Sunday morning when the driver lost control, struck a utility pole and then drove over an embankment.

The incident happened at around 11 a.m. near the Sayward Road intersection and resulted in the southbound lanes of Highway 17 being closed for nearly 30 minutes as crews worked to remove the vehicle.

Both the male driver and a female passenger were taken to hospital with injuries, which were minor and non-life-threatening.

Police say heavy rain and wet roads were likely factors in the crash, along with speed, and are asking anyone who may have witnessed or recorded the vehicle prior to the crash to contact them at 250-475-4337.
