Environment Canada has issued both heavy rainfall warnings and high wind warnings for multiple areas of Vancouver Island on Wednesday, Dec. 30.

In a statement posted by the weather agency, it claims that heavy winds are expected to hit the northern regions and eastern regions of Vancouver Island, while heavy rain is expected along the west and east coasts.

According to Environment Canada, a Pacific frontal system is currently over West Vancouver Island producing heavy rainfall. Rainfall is anticipated to total approximately 100 mm by this evening.

On Eastern Vancouver Island, the frontal system will produce heavy rain from Qualicum Beach to Fanny Bay. Environment Canada says that rainfall will total an amount of 50 mm this evening with rain easing to a few showers by tonight.

In addition to the rain, high winds are anticipated in this area as well. Environment Canada notes that southeast winds of 60 to 80 km/h are expected over exposed coastal sections of East Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast today. The agency says heavy wind will hit areas between Fanny Bay and Nanoose Bay as well as between Courtenay and Campbell River.

Winds will ease by this evening, suggests Environment Canada.

On North Vancouver Island and southern sections of the Central Coast, Environment Canada says the strong winds could clock up to 90 km/h, easing by midday on Wednesday.

Residents are able to monitor power outages throughout the day at BC Hydro’s website.
