A Vancouver Island-born NHLer had a pretty good night, getting his first-ever goal and a hat trick all in the same game.
Dylan Coghlan, who was born in Duncan but grew up in Nanaimo, scored all three goals for the Golden Knights in their 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Wednesday night.
Coghlan’s first-ever NHL goal came within the first two minutes of the first period. His second goal came 14 minutes into the third period. His third goal came a few minutes later.
After the game, Coghlan told reporters that was “nice to get the first one out of the way” and that he hadn’t scored three goals in a game in years.
“I had a couple close calls in junior, but a hat trick, I haven’t had since I was 10, probably, or even younger,” he said.
Coghlan is just the third defenseman in NHL history to score his first three career goals in the same game. He also became the 11th player in the last 30 years to score his first three goals in the same game.
