Greater Victoria Public Libraries continue to reinstate services for the public

The Greater Victoria Public Library’s 12 branches have undergone a huge pivot during the pandemic, especially with their online presence.

“Our ‘holds’ are extremely popular in the best of times,” says Devon Tatton, with arts, culture and heritage at GVPL. “Luckily our collections team really beefed up our digital collection. We had a really good collection before, and it’s just gotten so much bigger and so much more popular. Lots of e-books, lots of e-audio, and magazines are always popular online as well.”

Parents will be pleased to learn the summer reading program is being offered once again.

“We know it’s been really hard for families.  Kids don’t pick books like adults pick books.  Adults put on ‘holds,’ and are willing to wait, but kids need something right now,” says Tatton.

In order to be part of the program, the GVPL asks that kids read or be read to for 20 minutes each day.

“If they do that for 7 weeks in the summer, and they keep track of their books online, they can come back and pick a brand new book that they never have to bring back to the library, and a medal,” says Tatton.
